IPTC Returning to Kuala Lumpur

The eighth International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) will return to Kuala Lumpur for the second time in December.

Themed “Innovation and Collaboration: Keys to Affordable Energy,” the conference is making its second appearance in Kuala Lumpur on 10-12 December 2014 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

IPTC—an annual event that rotates between Asia Pacific and the Middle East—is organized to advance scientific and technological knowledge related to the exploration, development, production, transportation and processing of oil and natural gas. The annual conference’s program focuses on the upstream oil and gas value chain, from subsurface technologies used in exploration and production to the transportation of hydrocarbons.

Conference sponsoring organizations include the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers (EAGE), the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and SPE. Malaysia’s national oil company, Petronas, is hosting the event along with co-hosts Shell and Schlumberger.

The opening ceremony on 10 December will include a keynote address by Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak and remarks by IPTC Board Chairman Dato’ Mohamad Idris Mansor and Petronas President and CEO Tan Sri Dato’ Shamsul Azhar Abbas, who served as an Honorable Advisor to the eighth IPTC Executive Committee.

The opening ceremony will be followed by a ministerial session and an executive plenary that will discuss:

• Major industry challenges that have required innovation in business models, technologies and relationships between companies, in order to bring resources on stream.

• The evolution in collaborative working practices between resource holders, operators, technology developers and service providers.

• The hurdles to new ways of working and how those hurdles been overcome.

• How has leadership in this more collaborative environment had to change.

• How the leadership of R&D and technology introduction changed.

In addition to the executive plenary session, a special Technology Leaders Plenary Session titled “Leveraging Technology: Current Challenges and Opportunities for the Future” and an industry plenary session will take place on 11 and 12 December 2014, respectively. Four panel sessions will focus on current industry issues and the conference theme through focal topics.

In line with the innovation and collaboration theme of the conference, the 11 December topical luncheon will feature Royal Dutch Shell’s Executive Vice President of Upstream International Harry Brekelmans. In his presentation, Brekelmans will discuss how to meet the needs of an exploding global population in a sustainable way through collaboration in technology, and innovative collaboration in the establishment of policies, regulations and relationships.

From the 1,700 papers that were submitted to be presented, 530 were selected for 63 technical sessions by the Program Committee to reflect the balance between engineering and geoscience disciplines, and to emphasize the importance of collaboration between geoscientists and petroleum engineers.

SPE members and nonmembers alike will receive a $100 discount on registrations made before 13 September

For a more informal approach to knowledge sharing, ePosters presentations(electronic, multimedia posters in the PowerPoint format) will be offered to conference-goers to provide an opportunity for enhanced discussion and interaction between paper authors and attendees, with ePaper stations will be located throughout the conference. Training courses will offered by each of the sponsoring member organization before the conference on 8-9 December. Learn more andregister here.
